The town of St. Margaret’s Hope is situated at the northern end of South Ronaldsay, sitting at the head of a sheltered bay. The town has become busier since a car ferry connection to Gills Bay became operational.

At present day St. Margaret’s Hope is the third biggest town on the Orkney Islands. Pentland Ferries started serving the St. Margaret’s hope - Gills Bay route in 2001.

There are three daily crossings during the winter months and during the summer four daily sailings. Crossing time is about one hour and the vessel accommodates both passengers and vehicles. The Pentalina B. vehicle ferry can carry 250 passengers and 48 vehicles during summertime, during the winter its capacity is slightly reduced.
